Geoffrey Bawa. Architektur für die Sinne
26.09.2026 – 28.02.2027

Barragán Lecture #6: Solitude is Good Company – Casa Majahua by Barragán

Barragán Lecture #6: Solitude is Good Company – Casa Majahua by Barragán
TALK (EN)

Gäste: Ingrid Moye, Christoph Zeller, Nina Kirste und Josef Grillmeier
Donnerstag, 29. Oktober 2026
18:30 Uhr, Christoph Merian Stiftung, Basel

TALK (EN)
Guests: Ingrid Moye, Christoph Zeller, Nina Kirste,
and Josef Grillmeier
Thursday, 29 October 2026
6:30 pm, Christoph Merian Stiftung, Basel
In cooperation with OPEN HOUSE BASEL

A lecture series presented in cooperation with the Barragan Foundation explores the work of Luis Barragan from various perspectives. This talk focuses on Casa Majahua, a holiday house built by Barragan in the 1950s. Situated on a remote stretch of Mexico’s Pacifi c coast, the dwelling was used only briefly before eventually falling into disrepair within its encroaching
natural environment.

The urgency of preserving this little-known part of the architect’s legacy led to the first comprehensive documentation of the house through the Architectural Association Summer School Programme, directed by the German-Mexican studio Zeller & Moye. Illustrated with archival and survey materials, their lecture traces the remains of Casa Majahua and refl ects on strategies of reuse, repair and sustainable reactivation in the face of physical decay.

He made chairs float from the ceiling and created organic living landscapes that continue to fascinate us today: the Danish architect and designer Verner Panton (1926–1998) shaped post-war design like few others. To celebrate the centenary of his birth, the Vitra Design Museum will dedicate a major exhibition at the Vitra Schaudepot to Panton’s work. Showcasing the full breadth of his creative output – from iconic pieces like the »Panton Chair« to his lighting and textile designs – it will also feature several of his little-known architectural projects. A walk-in reconstruction of the legendary »Fantasy Landscape« (1/8) 1970, brings Panton’s revolutionary understanding of space and the spirit of the era vividly to life. The exhibition design transforms his sculptural, colour-rich worlds into an immersive experience. The show is based on the extensive Verner Panton Collection at the Vitra Design Museum, which is one of the most important of its kind and comprises a unique wealth of objects, drawings, models and archival materials. The exhibition, created in close collaboration with Verner Panton Design AG, invites visitors to rediscover a visionary designer – between Pop, utopia, and organic worlds of colour.

The unique ensemble on the Vitra Campus gains an extraordinary architectural addition with the Doshi Retreat: a contemplative sanctuary designed as a peaceful space for silence and reflection. This remarkable project by Balkrishna Doshi, created in close collaboration with his granddaughter Khushnu Panthaki Hoof and Sönke Hoof, seamlessly integrates into the vision of the Vitra Campus as a biosphere.
The Doshi Retreat breaks down the boundaries between architecture, art and spiritual design. Laid out as a winding path, it guides visitors through a transformative journey: beneath the earth, alongside walls that resonate with sound. Khushnu Panthaki Hoof explains: "This architecture was born from a dream Doshi had of two interweaving cobras."
The project offers practical inspiration for a more sustainable approach to building: The walls are constructed from innovative XCarb® steel with low carbon emissions, which develops a warm patina through controlled corrosion. The partially open ceiling with a hand-hammered brass mandala from India creates an opening for light and air.
Experience more about this extraordinary place and its architectural details on a guided tour through the Vitra Campus.

Geoffrey Bawa. Architektur für die Sinne
26.09.2026 – 28.02.2027

With a career spanning five decades and over 200 projects, Geoffrey Bawa (1919-2003) counts as one of the most influential 20th-century architects in Asia. Bawa’s remarkable oeuvre shaped the architecture of postcolonial Sri Lanka, and includes hotels, private residences, schools, universities, factories, office buildings, and the country’s parliament. Today, his approach is being rediscovered worldwide as a guiding inspiration for socially and ecologically sustainable building practice.

Special: Building together: Weil Chair (DE)

Dauer: 8 Stunden

Dieser Termin ist ausverkauft.
